| How do I register a new domain name on the Internet? |
To register a domain name on the Internet, you will need to process an application online through a company website that offers
domain name registrations. Depending on the type of domain name you want to register, there may be some restrictions or requirements
that must be met to ensure you are able to register a particular domain name. For example, to register a .com.au domain name (eg:
registerdomains.com.au), you need to be a registered Australian business as .com.au domain names are reserverd only for Australian
businesses.
Normally, registering a .com or .net domain name is the fastest (and cheapest) method of registering a domain name,
although, it does serve purposefully if you register a domain name that is representative of your website. For example, as an
Australian business owner, you would much prefer to register a .com.au domain name to represent that you ARE an Australian business.
If you are a representative of community organisation and wanted to set up a website for the organisation, you should register a
.org domain name.
If you do not have a domain name, and would like to purchase one and set up a hosting account with us to host your website on the
Internet, you are able to search for and select a domain name once you have chosen a plan from our
webhosting page.

| How long does it take for changes to come into effect once I have made changes to DNS Records? |
| Any changes to DNS Records are updated within 5 minutes on our system, however, it generally takes some time to propagate through
the Internet. Generally the TTL (time to live) of records hosted with RackCorp is 1 hour, but due to some non-standards conforming
software on the Internet you should allow for up to 48 hours.
|
| Do I use STANDARD or GEO DNS(Advanced) DNS settings? |
| The GEO DNS settings should only be used if you know what you are doing. It is there for when you have your website/services hosted in multiple geographic locations, and wish to redirect end-customers to those different hosting locations depending upon where they are located. These services are often used by Content Delivery Networks (CDNs), or other content-rich applications. For example, your European customers can be served out of servers in Germany, while your US customers may be served from the US. If you wish to host your website in multiple locations to use these kinds of closest-serving technologies, then get in touch with RackCorp Sales to see what we can do for you.
|
| What are the "Default" settings in GEO-DNS? |
| These settings are used whenever you have not configured specific records for a country. It is often used for things like nameservers and mail servers which typically do not change depending upon end-customer location. You will want to at a minimum specify ALL of your records in this default section, and then define specific records for some/all of the other locations.
|
| How precise is the Geo DNS matching? |
| On a per-country basis, we have performed tests internally and believe services hit 98% precision for the major regions defined. There are some sub-regions (such as in Australia like Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, etc) which we have scored at around 80% precision during our tests. As the world more likes to share location information, we'll continue to add to our records, so this information will only get better over time.
